The summer school holidays start no later than Saturday 19 December 2026 and run through to the start of Term 1 in late January or early February 2027. That is the longest break of the year, and it is close enough that the best family stays are already filling up. Here is how to fill the weeks in Auckland, and where to stay while you do it.

Things to do in Auckland over summer

Check opening hours, ferry timetables and prices on each operator's own site before you go.

Beaches. Orewa and Beachlands both have long, family-friendly beaches, and the east coast bays and North Shore beaches suit a quick swim after dinner. Shakespear and Tawharanui regional parks up the coast are good for a bigger day out.
Ferries from the city. A ferry from Downtown to Waiheke Island or Devonport makes an easy day out for kids who like boats.
Auckland Zoo and MOTAT, both at Western Springs. Next door to each other, so the two make an easy day.
New Zealand Maritime Museum, Viaduct Harbour. Boats, voyaging stories and the waterfront outside.

Booking direct on stayhub.co.nz means no third-party booking fee: you pay the same nightly rate without a platform's cut added on top. You still pay a cleaning fee and a Guest Experience Levy, which apply on any channel. The other real differences are that you talk to the people who actually run the property, and changes are easier to sort out.

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY SAVE

Let us be precise, because most "book direct" pages are not.

What goes away: the third-party booking fee. Booking platforms add a service fee to what you pay at checkout. Book direct and there is no platform taking a cut on top of the rate.

What does not go away: the cleaning fee and the Guest Experience Levy. Both apply whichever way you book. Anyone telling you the nightly rate is the total price is not being straight with you, on any channel.

So the honest claim is a narrow one, and it is still worth having: same stay, same rate, without a platform's cut on top.

THE PARTS THAT ARE NOT ABOUT MONEY

You talk to the people who run the property

Direct means you are dealing with the team that manages the house, not a messaging system with a support queue behind it. If you need a late check-out, a travel cot, or to know whether the driveway takes a van, you get an answer from someone who has actually stood in the property.

Changes are easier

Plans move. Flights get cancelled, someone gets sick, a work trip shifts. Sorting that out directly is almost always faster and more flexible than working through a platform's process.

You get the full picture before you book

Direct listings can tell you things platform listings often cannot fit or are not asked for. Whether the second bathroom is a shower over the bath. Which bedroom gets the morning sun. Whether the wifi actually holds up for a video call.

WHEN AIRBNB IS GENUINELY THE BETTER CHOICE

We would rather be useful than one-sided, so here is the other side.

If you want the platform's protections. Airbnb's booking protection and dispute process is a real thing and some travellers value it, particularly for a first booking with a host they do not know.

If you are comparing across dozens of properties from lots of different operators. That is what a marketplace is for and it does that job well.

If you already have credit or a voucher there. Obviously.

What are the best things to do in Rotorua?

Rotorua's attractions fall into four easy groups — geothermal, cultural, outdoors and relaxation. Most visitors mix one or two from each over a weekend. Here's a quick view before we go deeper.

Geothermal Rotorua: geysers, mud and coloured lakes

Rotorua sits on one of the world's most active geothermal fields, and it's the reason most people visit.

Rotorua is one of the best places in the country to experience Māori culture first-hand.

Where to stay in Taupō with kids

Families in Taupō do best staying within a short drive of the lakefront, either in town for walkability or on the hill for space and views. Town puts the playground, pools, and food within walking distance. The hill and the bays give you a bigger house, a garden and somewhere for kids to be loud. Both work. The choice really comes down to what your days look like.

THE SHORT ANSWER, BY FAMILY TYPE

Toddlers and preschoolers — Central Taupō, walking distance to the lakefront — Short walks, easy naps, playground and cafes at hand, no long drives with a tired child

Primary-aged kids — The hill above town, or Two Mile Bay — Space to run, a garden, still five minutes from everything

Teenagers — Anywhere with good wifi and a decent lounge — Genuinely. Proximity to town matters less than somewhere they can have their own space

Multiple families together — Larger homes on the hill or out toward the bays — You need bedrooms and a big table more than you need a location

WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS IN A TAUPŌ BACH WITH KIDS

Having stayed with a lot of families in a lot of houses, these are the things that change a holiday, in roughly the order they matter.

Where everyone sleeps. Four bedrooms that work are better than five that do not. Check whether the fourth bedroom is really a bedroom or a converted space with no door.
Heating. Taupō sits at about 360 metres, and it gets genuinely cold at night, even in shoulder season. A heat pump in the living area is close to essential.
Outdoor space that is fenced or contained. For under-fives, this is the single biggest difference between a relaxing week and a vigilant one.
A dishwasher and a real kitchen. Families cook. Self-catering is most of the reason you booked a house rather than motel rooms.
Off-street parking. Especially if you are travelling with a boat, bikes or a trailer.
Views, last. They are lov ely. They are also what people book for, and what matters least by day three.

GETTING AROUND, HONESTLY

Taupō is small, and the distances are shorter than they look on a map.

Central Taupō to the lakefront: walkable, a few minutes
The hill above town to the town centre: about 5 minutes by car
Taupō to Huka Falls: about 10 minutes
Taupō to Tongariro National Park (Whakapapa): about 1 hour 15 minutes
Taupō to Rotorua: about 1 hour

You will want a car. There is no meaningful public transport for visitors.

WHAT TO DO WITH KIDS IN TAUPŌ

Free or close to it:

The lakefront playground and swimming area at Two Mile Bay
Huka Falls, and the walkway along the river to get there
Hot water beach at Otumuheke Stream, where the thermal stream meets the river
Craters of the Moon geothermal walkway, mostly boardwalk and stroller-manageable in parts

Worth the money:

Taupō Debretts hot pools, with a dragon slide that keeps children entertained for hours
The Big Sky lookout gondola and luge above the town
A Lake Taupō boat trip out to the Māori rock carvings, only reachable by water
Wairakei Terraces for the geothermal walk

Day trips:

Orakei Korako geothermal park, about 25 minutes north and much quieter than the Rotorua parks
Tongariro National Park in summer for the shorter family walks, not the Crossing with young kids

WHEN TO GO

Summer, December to February. Peak. Warm enough to swim in the lake, and the town is busy. Book early, particularly for the Christmas to mid-January window.

Autumn, March to May. The quiet favourite. Still warm through March, far fewer people, and the best value.

Winter, June to August. Cold, and that is the point. Ski trips to Whakapapa use Taupō as a base, and the hot pools are at their best.

Spring, September to November. School holidays run 26 September to 11 October in 2026. Weather is unpredictable but the town is calm and prices are reasonable.

OUR PLACE IN TAUPŌ

We manage one property in Taupō: a four-bedroom bach on the hill above town, sleeping eight, with lake and mountain views. It suits a family with primary-aged kids or two families travelling together, and it is a few minutes' drive from the lakefront.
