Things to do in Auckland these summer holidays (and where to stay)

The summer school holidays start no later than Saturday 19 December 2026 and run through to the start of Term 1 in late January or early February 2027. That is the longest break of the year, and it is close enough that the best family stays are already filling up. Here is how to fill the weeks in Auckland, and where to stay while you do it.

When are the NZ summer school holidays?

  • Summer holidays start: No later than Saturday 19 December 2026
  • Term 1 2027 starts: Between Thursday 28 January and Wednesday 3 February 2027 (schools set their own date)

Things to do in Auckland over summer

Check opening hours, ferry timetables and prices on each operator's own site before you go.

  • Beaches. Orewa and Beachlands both have long, family-friendly beaches, and the east coast bays and North Shore beaches suit a quick swim after dinner. Shakespear and Tawharanui regional parks up the coast are good for a bigger day out.
  • Ferries from the city. A ferry from Downtown to Waiheke Island or Devonport makes an easy day out for kids who like boats.
  • Auckland Zoo and MOTAT, both at Western Springs. Next door to each other, so the two make an easy day.
  • New Zealand Maritime Museum, Viaduct Harbour. Boats, voyaging stories and the waterfront outside.
  • Wynyard Quarter. Free waterfront playground, plus room to run along the water.
  • Te Whatu Stardome, One Tree Hill. Planetarium shows, good for a wet afternoon.

Book early for the summer holidays

If you know roughly when you want to get away, it pays to book now and sort the details later.

Why book direct? No third-party booking fees. Book direct and you pay the same rate, without a platform's cut on top. A cleaning fee and our Guest Experience Levy still apply on any channel. You also deal directly with the team that looks after the home, so questions about cots, parking or check-in go to people who know the property. More on why book direct instead of Airbnb.

A holiday home with its own spa pool is the easiest way to make a weekend away feel like a proper break. Stayhub has spa-pool homes across the Auckland region: beach houses on the North Shore and at Orewa and Beachlands, a converted barn in Matakana for two, and big group homes in Albany and Pōkeno.

Booking direct on stayhub.co.nz means no third-party booking fee: you pay the same nightly rate without a platform's cut added on top. You still pay a cleaning fee and a Guest Experience Levy, which apply on any channel. The other real differences are that you talk to the people who actually run the property, and changes are easier to sort out. WHAT YOU ACTUALLY SAVE Let us be precise, because most "book direct" pages are not. What goes away: the third-party booking fee. Booking platforms add a service fee to what you pay at checkout. Book direct and there is no platform taking a cut on top of the rate. What does not go away: the cleaning fee and the Guest Experience Levy. Both apply whichever way you book. Anyone telling you the nightly rate is the total price is not being straight with you, on any channel. So the honest claim is a narrow one, and it is still worth having: same stay, same rate, without a platform's cut on top. THE PARTS THAT ARE NOT ABOUT MONEY You talk to the people who run the property Direct means you are dealing with the team that manages the house, not a messaging system with a support queue behind it. If you need a late check-out, a travel cot, or to know whether the driveway takes a van, you get an answer from someone who has actually stood in the property. Changes are easier Plans move. Flights get cancelled, someone gets sick, a work trip shifts. Sorting that out directly is almost always faster and more flexible than working through a platform's process. You get the full picture before you book Direct listings can tell you things platform listings often cannot fit or are not asked for. Whether the second bathroom is a shower over the bath. Which bedroom gets the morning sun. Whether the wifi actually holds up for a video call. WHEN AIRBNB IS GENUINELY THE BETTER CHOICE We would rather be useful than one-sided, so here is the other side. If you want the platform's protections. Airbnb's booking protection and dispute process is a real thing and some travellers value it, particularly for a first booking with a host they do not know. If you are comparing across dozens of properties from lots of different operators. That is what a marketplace is for and it does that job well. If you already have credit or a voucher there. Obviously. We list on Airbnb, Booking.com and other channels for exactly these reasons. Booking direct is better for most people most of the time. It is not better for everyone every time, and pretending otherwise would be the sort of thing we say we do not do. WHAT YOU CAN COUNT ON EITHER WAY Every property we manage is presented and maintained to the same standard whichever channel you book through. Accurate descriptions, real photos, proper cleaning between stays, and someone reachable seven days a week if something is not right. The channel changes the fee structure and who you talk to. It does not change the stay.

Rotorua's top things to do centre on its geothermal landscape and living Māori culture: walk the steaming terraces at Wai-O-Tapu or Te Puia, meet the community at Whakarewarewa, wander the Redwoods Treewalk, ride the Skyline Gondola and soak at the Polynesian Spa. It's an easy, activity-packed weekend away from Auckland. Three hours south of Auckland, Rotorua packs more into a weekend than almost anywhere in New Zealand — bubbling mud, erupting geysers, redwood forest, mountain-bike trails and centuries of Māori history, all within a short drive of the lakefront. Here's how to make the most of it, and where to base yourself so the good bits are on your doorstep.

For a family trip to Auckland, self-contained accommodation usually beats a single hotel room: you get separate spaces, a full kitchen, laundry and room to spread out, often near the beaches, parks and attractions families come for. Stayhub's Auckland stays are guest-ready and accurately described, with a real person on call seven days a week. Travelling to Auckland with kids is a different job to travelling as a couple. You're thinking about cots and car parks, early bedtimes and rainy-day plans, and whether everyone can eat breakfast without a queue. The good news: Auckland has some genuinely great family accommodation once you know what to look for, and where the fun is.

Families in Taupō do best staying within a short drive of the lakefront, either in town for walkability or on the hill for space and views. Town puts the playground, pools, and food within walking distance. The hill and the bays give you a bigger house, a garden and somewhere for kids to be loud. Both work. The choice really comes down to what your days look like.
